An Obituary written about my great-great grandfather in 1923

Death of Mr James Doyle

It is with deep regret that we have to chronicle the news of Mr J.Doyle’s death which occurred on the evening of the 14th instant, after a short illness, during which time he suffered severe pain, but towards the end passed away peacefully. His remains were interred in the Leeton cemetery on the 16th instant, when a large concourse of people attended, there being over 40 vehicles, besides horsemen showing the deep respect in which the deceased was held.Rev. Father Galvin officiated at the grave. This is another instance of one of the old pioneers of Australia passing away, at the age of 67 years, when perhaps, had his lines being cast in easy places, would probably yet be in his prime.

Born in Yass, when quite a young man followed gold rushes in Queensland,Western Australia and the Northern Territory as well being an expert shearer.Later taking up farming when he and his family suffered all the hardships of droughts and pestilences that pioneers have to contend with in the back country, till some 12 years ago.He then came and settled on the Irrigation area, where in those days of optimistic of success at last, but owing in this case, amongst other things, his only son James Oswald going and fighting in the Great War and lack of capitol, the old man practically wore himself out with hard and all the worry of it all.He took a deep interest in all public affairs.
